The Guide To Being Gluten Free In Happy Valley

April 27, 2017

Finding a decent restaurant is the worst part of living gluten free.  With all the eateries State College has to offer, it’s surprising how few them are celiac friendly.  I have compiled my own guide to help everyone who lives G-Free to be able enjoy the many tastes of State College.

1.  Download the app “Find Me Gluten Free”

This app can be helpful in any location. If you open it up and click ‘Search Near Me,’ all the restaurants in your that serve gluten free food will appear. It’s quick and easy, especially when you are trying to decide where to eat with your friends.

2. Cozy Thai

Located on South Allen street, Cozy Thai has amazing food and large selection of their foods are already gluten free. Their staff is very knowledgable about their menu and what’s g-free. If you go for lunch, you can pick from one of the many gluten free options on their lunch menu and get a side for $7.95. My personal favorite dish their is their Chicken Pad Thai.

3. Fiddlehead

Located on College Ave., not only does Fiddlehead have gluten-free options, they are also vegan friendly. They offer salads for everyone’s palate, plus they give you the option to create your own. If there is a pre-made salad you like, you can add or remove items to your liking. Every season, they feature different salads as well. During the fall they have a Harvest Salad that is to die for! It tastes just like Thanksgiving with roast turkey, sweet potato chips, corn and more. My go-to salad is the Ri-pear-ian, but I order it with kale instead of spinach and sunflower seeds instead of white cheddar cheese for $9.25.

4. Chipotle

Heaven on Earth, I mean, Chipotle, is located on Heister St. (next to Primanti Bros). and has several gluten free options. In fact, the only thing on their menu that someone who has celiac disease can’t order are the tortillas that make up the burritos and tacos. Any burrito bowl or salad option is certified gluten free, and safe for those with celiac to eat.

5. Wegmans

If you are in the mood to make your own meal Wegmans offers a large selection of gluten free options. They carry gluten-free breads, pastas, pre-made meals, pastries and so much more. Their website offers an entire list of their gluten-free foods.

Other restaurants in State College that offer gluten-free menu options are:

  1. Mad Mex

  2. Green Bowl

  3. The Corner Room

  4. Cafe Verve

  5. Sower’s Harvest Cafe

  6. Saints Cafe

  7. Noodles & Company
